Loughrea's local station awarded third FM Licence from Coimisiún na Meán

After delivering outstanding service to the community of Loughrea and its surrounding areas over the past four years, LCRfm 102.9 has been awarded a third one hundred-day FM license by broadcasting authority Coimisiún na Meán. Fund boost for GRETB

Close to €150,000 in funding has been announced for Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board. The funding will help improve access and supports for around 600 learners in Galway, Roscommon and surrounding areas. SOLAS – the state agency responsible for Further Education and Training – has made the allocation as part of €5 million in national Reach Funding. It will also support participation in online learning, connect communities, and provide social supports to the most vulnerable groups in the local communities.
Extensive damage caused to Temperance Hall during burglary

Gardaí have issued an appeal after “extensive” damage was caused to Temperance Hall in Loughrea during a burglary over the weekend. Intruders entered the hall at Barrack Street between Sunday, March 31st, and Monday, April 1st, between the hours of 12pm and 8pm. Extensive damage was caused to the inside of the premises, and a sum of money and beverages were taken. Anyone with information – or who saw any suspicious activity – is asked to contact Loughrea Garda Station at 091 842 870. They can also contact the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.

Supermacs boss Pat McDonagh has described the GAA’s reaction to its April Fool’s Day joke as a ‘storm in a teacup’. The fast-food company had its social media pages suspended after the GAA made a trademark complaint about a joke posted online by Supermacs. It posted a photoshopped picture of Croke Park, claiming it had been rebranded ‘Supermac’s Croke Park’ – an April Fools joke inspired by the recent controversy over the renaming of Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Easter Bank Holiday road safety enforcement campaign

Nineteen people have been arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving in the first 24 hours of the Garda Easter Bank Holiday road safety enforcement campaign, which will continue until Tuesday morning. Checkpoints are in place across the country as part of the campaign. 1000km Charity cycle gets under way

Cllr Moegie Maher, TD Ciaran Cannon and other locals from Loughrea have embarked on a 1000Km Charity Cycle this week in France. They will be raising money for The Irish Pilgrimage Trust over the next 2 Weeks. The monies raised will be used to take 500 People with Special needs to Lourdes. Loughrea woman is set to receive a Member of the Order of Australia

A Loughrea woman is set to receive a Member of the Order of Australia for her work in researching and raising funds for pancreatic cancer awareness later this year. Caroline Kelly is originally from Gurtymadden but has since become a citizen of Sydney. he co-founded PanKind, the Australian Cancer Foundation in 2008 which focuses on positive change in the lives of pancreatic cancer patients. The charity has raised over 11 million Australian dollars over the years in various fundraising efforts, such as the ‘Put your Foot Down’ Walks. Caroline was named on the Honours List for Australia Day last month, and will receive the award later this year from Australian Governor-General......
Time to close the gates on Illegal dumping in Loughrea

Galway County Council is taking firm steps to combat repeated illegal dumping in a Loughrea estate. It’s to erect two gates to stop dumping in a field adjacent to Fahy Gardens. There was such a volume of rubbish dumped there recently that four skips were needed to take it away.There’s also been complaints of giant rats in the estate as a result of the massive build-up of waste. Councillor Declan Kelly said residents of Fahy Gardens have been putting up with the situation for far too long.
